October 21st 2013, Facebook goes down: Outage prevents photo-sharing, status updates

Users eager to share updates of their weekend activities via Facebook were prevented from doing so this Monday 21st of October 2013, after an apparent outage limited function on the popular website.

Users could still log into the social networking site but could not post status updates, comments, photos or send messages.

Instead users received an error message urging them to “try again in a few minutes.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the outage, or how many users were affected. While some users wrote on other social media sites that they were “Facebooking” again, it was not clear when the all the site’s services would be functioning normally again.

There was no indication on Facebook’s news page or its Twitter account acknowledging a service disruption, but Iain Mackenzie, Facebook’s communications manager in Europe, tweeted about the issue.

As one of the most popular and recognizable websites on the Internet, Facebook attracts significant traffic. In June, the website boasted 699 million daily active users, and 1.15 billion monthly active users.

Founded in 2004 by chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook today employs more than 5,000 people.
