PUNCTUATION - The dot

Post  TEFL Teacher on Mon Apr 09, 2012 1:46 pm

The Dot (aka, ellipsis)

Dots are used to indicate a person is trailing off. They can also be used to suggest hesitation by the writer.

The correct way to use them is in a series of three ... unless at the end of a sentence, in which case, four dots are used .... (the fourth dot is actually the period, ending the sentence).

Example of a pause: "She wasn't upset...she just wanted some answers."

Example of trailing off: "He said he didn't kill her, but..."

Example of trailing off at the end of a sentence
: "With Jim dead, it's just been so hard...."
