Phone number to open a Facebook account? Empty Phone number to open a Facebook account?

I tried to open a Facebook account, but Facebook ask for my phone number. I don't want to give it because I fear it will be use badly and Facebook gives my phone number fro commercial.
But can I open an account if I don't have phone number??? Do you know?

It seems that this bother a lot of people. I ever heard that all the information you put online in Facebook are kept forever by Facebook owners, and that they even give our information to Google or other companies to EARN MONEY with the information we put in our Facebook profiles!
It seems that even if you delete your Facebook account, Facebook company still keep all your information. Is that true?
