- "gruff as a bear"
Gruff; curt and unsociable.
Ex: "I hate to ask Erica questions; she's always gruff as a bear." - "I'm always as gruff as a bear before I've had my first cup of coffee."

- "a bear hug"
An action in which you put your arms tightly around someone and hold them close to you in order to show them affection.
Ex: "Her cousin gave her an affectionate bear hug which almost took her breath away."
