Much and many
Much and many
1. Much is used with uncountable nouns in negative sentences.
2. Much is used in questions. Here, it is not followed by the noun “milk” because the meaning is clear without it.
3. Many is used with plural nouns in negative sentences.
4. Many is used in questions. Here, the meaning is clear without the plural noun “potatoes”
5. In informal English, people don’t often use “much” or “many” in positive sentences. They use a lot of or lots of

Vincent has just been to the local supermarket to buy food.
Rael: You didn’t get much (1) milk.
Vincent: Didn’t I? How much (2) did you want?
Rael: Well, more than this. Two cartons, ideally.
Vincent: Oh!
Rael: And you didn’t get many (3) potatoes, either.
Vincent: Well, how many (4) do we need?
Rael: We need quite a lot (5). There’ll be eight of us.

Rael: Hardly. You know how much Sonja eats. She could eat all of these by herself.
