Poetry is concentrated language, often seen as an outlet for expressing feelings and ideas. A synonym poem says something meaningful in just a few words. Writing a synonym poem is also a great means of entertainment. As Robert Frost describes poetry: "Emotion has found its thought and the thought has found the words." Brainstorming adjectives and descriptive phrases related to a series of words is the means used to explore, write and develop a synonym poem.

Instructions:

1. Choose a word. Write it down. Look up your word in the dictionary to fully understand its definition.

2. Look up the word you've chosen in a thesaurus to find three or four synonyms. List the synonyms in a single line, capitalizing the first letter of the first word. Separate each word with a comma.

3. Write a simile or sentence on the second line. The line should finish or complete the thought of the synonyms above. End this line with a period. For instance, using the word "debauchery," synonyms would be: bender, binge, blowout. A synonym poem could read:
"Debauchery, Bender, binge, blowout..."

4. Play with different combinations of words and phrases. Write down any word that pops out in your mind and elaborate. Keep in mind that poetry is about how the writer feels, not how others think you should feel.
